At Virginia Hernia, our entire practice is dedicated to treating hernias and abdominal wall conditions. Led by board-certified general surgeon Dr. Michael Svestka, we provide specialized care for everything from routine groin hernias to large, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, with a strong focus on patient education and individualized treatment planning.
A Practice Focused Entirely on Hernia Surgery
Hernias affect millions of Americans every year and occur when tissue or part of an organ pushes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall. These conditions can develop in the groin, belly button, prior surgical incisions, around an ostomy, or along the side of the abdomen. While some hernias remain relatively asymptomatic, others may cause pain, pressure, visible bulging, digestive symptoms, or limitations in exercise, lifting, and daily activity.
At Virginia Hernia, hernia surgery is not just one part of a broader general surgery practice. Our practice focuses exclusively on abdominal wall and hernia conditions, enabling specialization in both routine repair and hernia reconstruction. This supports more detailed evaluations, individualized surgical planning, and modern treatment strategies tailored exclusively to the complexity of each patient’s condition.
Expertise Spanning Routine to Complex Reconstruction
Virginia Hernia provides treatment across the full spectrum of hernia complexity. Routine conditions such as inguinal, femoral, umbilical, and epigastric hernias are evaluated alongside large ventral hernias, recurrent hernias, flank hernias, parastomal hernias, mesh complications, and complex abdominal wall defects requiring reconstruction.
Dr. Svestka completed his general surgery residency at Stony Brook University Hospital before his advanced training in abdominal wall reconstruction at the Cleveland Clinic Comprehensive Hernia Center. There, he trained directly with the team that pioneered the TAR (Transversus Abdominis Release) technique, an advanced procedure for abdominal wall reconstruction.
Over the past several years, Dr. Svestka has focused on refining advanced hernia repair techniques while leading one of the region’s largest hernia programs. As the Founder and Medical Director of the Inova Comprehensive Hernia Program, he directed a multidisciplinary hernia network spanning five hospitals and more than 25 surgeons throughout the Inova Health System.
A Comprehensive Approach Before and After Surgery
Successful hernia treatment often involves more than the operation itself. At Virginia Hernia, surgical planning begins with a thorough, careful evaluation of your anatomy, prior operations, imaging studies, symptoms, activity goals, and overall health. Treatment recommendations are then developed using evidence-based guidelines and individualized to the hernia’s complexity. For selected patients, prehabilitation and medical optimization may be recommended prior to surgery.
This may involve weight management, smoking cessation, diabetes optimization, abdominal wall conditioning, or coordination with bariatric, endocrine, or physical therapy specialists to improve surgical readiness. Postoperative recovery is approached with the same level of detail. In some cases, postoperative physical therapy may be incorporated to help restore abdominal wall strength, mobility, and core function while supporting a safer return to normal activity.
Personalized Education and Continuity of Care
Virginia Hernia was founded on an elective practice model that allows greater time, attention, and continuity throughout your care experience. Every new patient consultation is scheduled for 30 minutes, providing dedicated time to review imaging, discuss surgical and non-surgical options, explain risks and benefits, and answer questions thoroughly.
Dr. Svestka is known for his highly educational approach to patient care, frequently using customized visual presentations to help patients better understand their diagnosis, anatomy, and surgical options. All postoperative visits and follow-up care are personally managed by Dr. Svestka to ensure continuity, accessibility, and individualized attention throughout recovery.
His commitment to quality care has earned him recognition as a Washingtonian Top Doctor in 2022, 2024, and 2025, along with consistently high patient satisfaction scores across both Healthgrades and the Inova Health System.
